SEX SCANDAL: Pope's aide arrives Australia to face charges

Pell landed Sydney early in the morning after flying from the Vatican via Singapore, reported the Guardian.

"When he was told of the charges by Victoria Police Cardinal Pell said in Rome he totally rejected the allegations, was completely innocent of the charges and would return to Australia to vigorously defend himself and clear his name".

At that news conference in Rome last month, Cardinal Pell said he was a victim of "relentless character assassination".

Pell, one of eight cardinals tasked by Pope Francis with studying reform in the Catholic Church, said the Holy Father granted him leave to return to Australia to fight the charges.

Pell has strenuously denied allegations of historical sexual abuse, the details of which have not been made public. He is due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on July 26.

The charges coincided with the final stages of Australia's Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sex Abuse, ordered in 2012 after a decade of pressure to investigate widespread allegations of institutional paedophilia.

Cardinal George Pell has returned to Australia this morning under the cover of dawn, less than two weeks since he was charged with historical child sex offences.

Anthony Fisher, the archbishop of Sydney, has said that the church will not pay for Cardinal Pell's legal defense, though he said it would assist with his "accommodation and support".

Police have said the accusations relate to alleged "historic" incidents.

"I repeat that I am innocent of these charges. They are false. The whole idea of sexual abuse is abhorrent to me", he said in an address to media in Rome the day he was charged.

Cardinal Pell had been heard three times in this frame and had recognized before the commission of inquiry to have "failed" in its handling of pedophile priests in the State of Victoria in the 1970s.
