Mexico President Hopes US Relations Will Focus on 'Positive Ends'

Then Trump was asked about his longstanding campaign pledge to build a border wall to curtail undocumented crossings and drug smuggling, and force the Mexican government to pay for it.

The president made the remarks when questioned by a reporter Friday as he sat down next to Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto at the G-20 summit in Germany.

On Jan. 27, both Trump and Nieto issued a joint statement agreeing not to discuss the matter in public after they had exchanged a war of words on the proposal that resulted in a cancelled diplomatic meeting. Trump has accused Mexico of stealing U.S. jobs, and complex talks over renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) are due to begin on August 16.

"It wasn't part of our conversation (with Trump)", he told Mexico's Radio Formula.

Trump first met Pena Nieto in August 2016 when he was still a presidential candidate.

Trump told this morning's joint press conference with Peña Nieto, whom he called his friend, that he thought they had made "very good progress" at today's meeting, their first since Trump took office in January.

"We expect to have a meaningful, constructive, modernization of the agreement that is good for the three nations", the minister said.

"I think. a lot of focus can do some good there, and I think we're going to head down that path", the Central Intelligence Agency director said at the time.

Kelly, along with CIA Director Mike Pompeo, met with Pena Nieto to discuss approaches to transnational crime, regional security, and economic cooperation.

"And if we don't get it, we will terminate, that is, end NAFTA forever", he said in the video. President Trump has also received skepticism from his own supporters regarding his lack of progress on the wall, as bids to build the wall are still now under review.

Erecting a Mexican-funded wall along the US southern border to curb illegal immigration has been a priority and faltering promise for the current administration.

In fact, Mr Videgaray added, Mr Peña Nieto didn't even hear the President's photo-op comment.
