Small plane crashes onto crowded California highway


A twin-engine Cessna 310 airplane with two people aboard crashed and burst into flames on the San Diego 405 Freeway in the Irvine area Friday.

California Highway Patrol said that the plane clipped the auto of an off-duty fire captain as it was coming down, though the captain was not injured, KCBS reported.

The plane went down around 9:30 a.m. just short of the runway, which is adjacent to the freeway, at John Wayne Airport, said Deanne Thompson, public information officer for the airport.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said the plane was trying to return to return to the airport when it fell from the sky and crashed on the freeway.
