Petya Ransomware hits over 2000 companies worldwide


Company and government officials reported serious intrusions at the Ukrainian power grid, banks and government offices.

It includes a code of External Blue, which cyber security experts was stolen from the US National Security Agency (NSA).

Ukraine and Russian Federation appeared hardest hit by the new strain of ransomware - malicious software that locks up computer files with all-but-unbreakable encryption and then demands a ransom for its release.

The payment method via an email address that was quickly shut down, is considered amateurish and led to speculation that the virus' objective was not monetary gain, but rather to simply cause damage.

Radiation monitoring at the Chernobyl nuclear facility had to be performed manually due to a related systems failure. In a Facebook post, MEDoc confirmed that it has hacked but denied responsibility for originating the attack.

Russia's Rosneft oil company also reported falling victim to hacking, as did Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk.

I'm willing to say with at least moderate confidence that this was a deliberate, malicious, destructive attack or perhaps a test disguised as ransomware.

Dutch-based transport company TNT Express, which was taken over a year ago by FedEx, also said Tuesday that it is suffering computer disruptions.

Symantec said Petya uses EternalBlue, a hacking weapon developed by the NSA, leaked online by a group known as the Shadow Brokers, and used in the WannaCry ransomware last month.

The rapidly spreading cyber extortion campaign, which began on Tuesday, underscored growing concerns that businesses have failed to secure their networks from increasingly aggressive hackers, who have shown they are capable of shutting down critical infrastructure and crippling corporate and government networks.

Media buying agency WPP PLC said on Wednesday that a number of its companies, though not all, were hit by the "Petya" ransomware attack on Tuesday.

TNP understands that staff members of TNT received a message on Tuesday night informing them of the attack, and they were told not to turn on their computers and to unplug them.

Before starting with the Petya ransomware attack, let's us first know what a ransomware actually means.

He also urged system users to turnoff unnecessary/unneeded features; avoid downloading and opening unsolicited files and attachments; adjust security software to scan compressed or archived files; and avoid indiscriminate use of wireless connections, such as bluetooth or infrared ports.

That means anyone could launch the ransomware with the click of a button, encrypt someone's systems and demand a ransom to unlock it. The ransomware affected companies in Australia and India.
