Mike Zimmer plans to return to Minnesota June 4
Zimmer, who is entering his fourth year at the helm in Minnesota, said being away from his team has been a chore. I've been pretty smart about it. "That might take an hour and a half or something and then I'll take a break".
Following the recent launches of seven AMD Ryzen desktop processors, including AMD Ryzen™ 7 and AMD Ryzen™ 5, created to bring innovation and competition back to the full spectrum of premium PC markets, AMD outlined continued momentum for Ryzen.
Although the relative performance of Intel's and AMD's new processors is unknown, AMD teased a few more details about ThreadRipper at the Computex conference in Taiwan yesterday. It will feature "up to" 16 cores and 32 threads, 64 PCIe 3.0 lanes, and quad channel DDR4 memory. AMD is now in the process of slowly releasing information about the chip to build up interest ahead of its launch - which, before you ask, hasn't been set yet and is still "this summer". AMD showed a short demo of Prey running at 4K on a Ryzen CPU and "dual RX Vega" combo, but without any benchmarks that didn't reveal a whole lot (aside from some unfortunate screen-tearing). Where things really get exciting is when pairing Threadripper with Vega, AMD's next-generation graphics architecture that will first be made available to professionals in the Radeon RX Vega Frontier Edition. Previously codenamed "Naples", the first EPYC processor-based servers are scheduled to launch June 20. Siggraph runs through August 3rd, so I am not sure we are going to see that as a hard launch, but we can be hopeful. For our audience, the main focuses would be on the Threadripper 16C/32T CPU and Radeon RX Vega GPUs, both of which were highlighted at the event. The X399 chipset, not to be confused with Intel's recently announced X299 chipset, will post motherboard availability at launch from ASRock, ASUS, Gigabyte, and MSI. That honor goes to the Vega Frontier Edition, arriving June 27.
Furthermore, AMD is not taking Nvidia's GPU lead lying down - the press event also saw a teaser of its new Radeon RX Vega, aimed at competing with Nvidia's top-end GeForce GTX 1080 cards.
