North Korea missile test is huge step forward

In a unanimous statement backed by China, the council stressed the importance of North Korea "immediately showing honest commitment to denuclearization through concrete action".

China might support a new round of United Nations sanctions against North Korea after Pyongyang launched another missile test just hours before Beijing held its biggest diplomatic event of the year, the belt and road forum, observers said.

North Korea, increasingly isolated over its repeated weapons tests in violation of United Nations resolutions, on Monday renewed its accusation of a USA and South Korean intelligence plot to assassinate leader Kim Jong Un.

The official North Korean news agency KCNA said the launch aimed at showing the technical capability to carry a "large scale heavy nuclear warhead".

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned Pyongyang over the missile launch and urged it return to denuclearization. Moon chaired an emergency meeting of security advisors early Sunday, within hours of the missile launch.

Nikki Haley, US Ambassador to the United Nations, said the latest missile test was a message to South Korea after the election of President Moon Jae-in, who took office on Wednesday.

Hence, Korean government conducts regular ballistic missile tests in accordance with its nuclear weapons agenda, in order to oversee national defense strategies against possible attacks.

But in comments apparently directed at the US, Putin said "intimidating the DRPK is unacceptable", using the acronym for North Korea.

Asked if North Korea's missile programme was developing faster than the South had expected, he said: "Yes".

Called Hwasong-12, the new North Korean missile flew for 787km to an altitude of 2,111.5km, according to North Korean media, before landing near the coast of Japan, sparking immediate condemnation from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The missile seems to have been equipped with a new, high-powered engine that was tested at the Tongchang-ri launch pad in remote North Pyongan Province in mid-March.

Moon, according to his office, called the launch a "clear violation" of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

But in comments that appeared aimed at the U.S., he said that "intimidating the DPRK is unacceptable", using an acronym of North Korea.

On Monday, North Korea's diplomatic representative in Beijing did not address any misgivings Seoul had about its recent missile test, or how the provocation could pose an obstacle to dialogue and reconciliation.

South Korea's military said it could not yet verify the North's claims.

"North Korea's latest successful missile test represents a level of performance never before seen from a North Korean missile", John Schilling, an aerospace engineer, told the Post.
