US president meets Pope Francis at Vatican

He adds of the pope: "He is something". When he changed his mind, the Vatican squeezed him in at 8:30 a.m. on a Wednesday morning, an unusual day and an unusually early time.

"Well, I'll be reading them", said the president, who has called global warming a plot by the Chinese to undermine American manufacturing.

Following the meeting, which was behind closed doors, the pontiff gifted Trump a medal by a Roman artist depicting an olive - a symbol of peace - as well as a signed message of peace and copies of his three main teaching documents.

"We can use peace", Trump replied.

The meeting with Pope Francis was warm and inspiring.

It seems needlessly mean, however, to deny Spicer what could be his single chance to meet a sitting Pope. The pope then greeted the other members of the USA delegation, which included Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and National Security Advisor General H.R. McMaster. The Pope, either at a loss for what to talk to Melania about or just morbidly curious, asked FLOTUS, "What do you give him to eat?".

Pope Francis shared a light moment with First Lady Melania Trump.

When asked why she wore a veil at the Vatican but eschewed a head covering in Saudi Arabia, Grisham said there was no request or requirement for her attire from that country. As is tradition, the pope and president then exchanged gifts.

President Donald Trump has gifted Pope Francis a first-edition set of writings from Martin Luther King Jr. "But I simply say, if he says these things, this man is not a Christian".

Politico quoted a Spicer interview about his faith during the presidential transition in which he said, "I'm going to look to God every day to give me the strength to do what's right".

Francis then gave Trump several books, including a book on the environment that he said he gives to all Catholics on family, the gospel and "care of our common home, the environment". According to Uproxx, NBC Senior News Editor Bradd Jaffy tweeted out a photo of an exasperated-looking pope standing next to a smiling Trump. Trump said he would read the books.

It took his tally to 26 for the season - despite missing nearly three months of the season through injury! Kane has 32 goals in 37 appearances in all competitions and 26 in only 29 Premier League outings.

After a highly anticipated meeting, Pope Francis appears to have left his mark on President Donald Trump.

The two leaders also highlighted freedom of worship and conscience, hoped for "serene collaboration" over issue of immigration, but environment not mentioned in Vatican statement. But there are few other areas where their views align.

With his poll numbers at a record low for a recently-elected president, he will be hoping for a boost after rubbing shoulders with the popular pope.

The Vatican has also urged Trump to listen to "dissenting voices" on climate change.

The greetings happened after Trump and Pope Francis held a almost 30 minute private meeting.

Pope Francis holds his weekly audience with the general public on Wednesday at 10:00am in St Peter's Square.

As with the Vatican meeting, the European Union talks are also set against an awkward backdrop.

"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian", Francis said at the time. The pontiff has been a vocal advocate for aiding refugees, particularly those fleeing the violence in Syria, deeming it both a "moral imperative" and "Christian duty" to help.

Trump went on the offensive after the pope's remarks, saying that Pope Francis was disgraceful. But he said it did come up in a discussion with Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin who pressed the administration not to abandon the Paris accord Tillerson said they told the cardinal they were still studying the issues and a decision had not yet been made.

Trump met separately with top Vatican diplomats and visited the Sistine Chapel before leaving the Vatican.

Trump is in the middle of his first worldwide trip - a nine-day journey through the middle east and Europe. Over the weekend, he stopped in Saudi Arabia, where he delivered an address to Muslim leaders, and Monday through Tuesday he visited Israel and the West Bank and met with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. No details or timetable have yet to be established for negotiations.
