North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency said the country tested a new type of long-range missile "capable of carrying a large-size heavy nuclear warhead".
Analysts said the most missile launch over the weekend constituted a significant technological jump, with the projectile apparently flying higher and for a longer time period than any previous missile. This image made from video of an undated still image broadcast in a news bulletin by North Korea's KRT on Monday, May 15, 2017, shows leader Kim Jong Un at what was said to be a missile test site at an undisclosed location in North. North Korea's push to boost its weapons programme also makes it one of the Trump administration's most urgent foreign policy worries.
The country's leader, Kim Jong Un, supervised the launch of the Hwasong-12 missile that reached an altitude of 2,111.5 kilometers (1,312 miles) and flew 787 kilometers (489 miles), KCNA said.
This range is considerably longer than the estimated range of the Musudan missile, which showed a range of about 3,000 km in a test past year.
"North Korea's latest successful missile test represents a level of performance never before seen from a North Korean missile", Washington-based monitoring project, 38 North, said in an analysis issued on Sunday.
The U.N.'s most powerful body says that North Korea is "greatly increasing tension in the region and beyond" and that it is vitally important the country immediately show "sincere commitment to denuclearization through concrete action". Tokyo said the flight pattern could indicate a new type of missile.
North Korea fired a ballistic missile that landed in the sea near Russian Federation on Sunday.
"Now you're going to see the entire global community isolate North Korea and let them know that this is not acceptable".
Meet the next Windows 10
Expect to see this feature show up in a Windows 10 Insider build this summer with general availability this fall. A user's Windows experience will move from device to device, using Microsoft's mobile apps for Android and iOS.
North Korea's state media generally confirmed those estimates.
State media paraphrased North Korea's leader as saying that "the most ideal weapon systems in the world will never become the eternal exclusive property of the US", warning that "the USA should not. disregard or misjudge the reality that its mainland and Pacific operation region are in (North Korea's) sighting range for strike". On Monday, South Korea's unification ministry warned North Korea to not miscalculate the situation. He said Sunday's launch - the seventh such firing by North Korea this year - may have been of a new mobile, two-stage liquid-fueled missile North Korea displayed in a huge April 15 military parade.
Moon kept open the possibility of an inter-Korea summit, initially proposed last Wednesday in his inaugural speech, but said it can only be held when Pyongyang "changes its behavior".
The US military's Pacific Command said the type of missile that was sacked was "not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile".
Trump has advocated for a diplomatic solution to the uptick in North Korean aggravations, but he said last month that he would not rule out a major conflict with North Korea.
"Let this latest provocation serve as a call for all nations to implement far stronger sanctions against North Korea", said the statement from White House press secretary Sean Spicer.
Six-party talks involving the North, the U.S., South Korea, Russia, China and Japan broke down in 2009.
