FBI Director James Comey Out: What it Means for Russia Investigation

Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning that Comey had "lost the confidence of nearly everyone in Washington, Republican and Democrat alike". "And then that he had said just several days before the election raised this question of looking back into the investigation". Shortly before the election, Comey released another letter saying his probe's conclusion remained unchanged: no charges for Clinton or her aides.

This occurred in 2003 when a special counsel investigated the disclosure of the identity of intelligence officer Valerie Plame.

After firing the highest ranking official of the FBI, President Donald Trump did not call a news conference to explain his actions.

The former director came under fire for announcing the Bureau was reopening its investigation into Clinton's email just days before the USA election. The Justice Department Deputy Attorney General, Rod Rosenstein, with whom the decision now lies for a special prosecutor, joined Sessions in writing memos recommending Trump oust Comey. In March, the world learned that Trump too was under an FBI investigation concerning the possible collusion between Russian Federation and his campaign team.

Trump then turned on Blumenthal, saying he should be the one to be investigated over "one of the greatest military frauds in USA history" due to past controversial statements he made about his own military service during the Vietnam War.

The Democrats expressed deep scepticism about the stated reasons for Tuesday's firing, raising the prospect of a White House effort to frustrate the investigations by the FBI and congressional panels.

If the Attorney-General ignores the recommendations of a special counsel, the rules specify that a report must be sent to Congress, according to Justin Levitt, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles.

Cruz didn't address whether the Senate should pursue an independent investigation in his statement Wednesday, but said "the next director needs to be someone of utmost integrity who can successfully restore the public's confidence". During a Senate hearing on 20 March 2017, Mr Comey acknowledged that potential links between Trump's associates and Russian Federation were also under review.

When the subpoenas came out and Comey asked for an expansion of the investigation, he was sacked. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called for a special prosecutor to be appointed to take over the Russian Federation probe.

Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, who will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee in Comey's place Thursday, is also in the running.

A Justice Department official says Attorney General Jeff Sessions is interviewing candidates to serve as the interim replacement for Comey. "I mean, did Trump forget about the Hillary emails that Comey talked about?"

Comey had sought to defend his conduct in Senate testimony last week. He said he was "mildly nauseous" at the thought of having swayed the election but also said he would do the same again. He further said, "I found the inclusion of that language very, very unusual, and again, raising even more questions about the motivation - about what happened here".
