"The reality is that many teenagers needing mental health help or new mothers with postnatal depression will not have a parent in prison or on a benefit so they will not get seen any faster or get the help they need".
Mr Coleman will point to investment in mental health services growing by 18 per cent to $1.4 billion in 2015/16, but admits more needs to be done.
What is very important, says Wentz, is that mental illness and substance-use disorders, which are present in about 60 percent of people with mental illness, must be recognized as real illnesses and they must be treated at the same level as physical health conditions.

The new announcement invests $6 million in additional funding per year for three years to support new mental health projects in the post-secondary education sector. The theme of this year is "Risky Business" to educate the public about habits and behaviors that increase the risk of developing or exacerbating mental illnesses, or could be signs of mental health problems themselves. "The Government hasn't listened to people who have tried to access mental health services in New Zealand nor those who work on the frontline of delivering those services".
BHD will also share stories, information and resources on social media and encourage people to have conversations by tweeting about the mental illness using #mhmconvo.
Mr Coleman will shortly take a paper to Cabinet outlining the Government's mental health addiction strategy, partly shaped by early feedback on a draft suicide prevention strategy. But the fiscal support that's needed to ensure access to treatment have always been insufficient, she says.
