Dallas SWAT team members and police officers are searching for the shooter near the crime scene, close to Dolphin Road and Interstate 30, which is near the Dallas Fire-Rescue Training Academy.
Another Dallas officer was also treated at the scene for an unspecified injury, authorities said.
A police sergeant "went in alone" and pulled out the injured paramedic.

The wounded paramedic, reported to be in critical condition, was rushed into surgery at at Baylor Medical Center, where fellow firefighters gathered.
The department requested a "citywide assist", meaning it asked for the help of any available Dallas officer.

The city said the paramedic, whose name has not been released, underwent surgery and is in "critical, but stable condition".

Anna Hill, president of the neighborhood association, tweeted a description of the shooter and told everyone to "be safe and look out". Dozens of police vehicles have swarmed the mostly residential area. Police believe Brown died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
