Government can't unveil schemes for poll-bound states in budget

The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday announced the poll dates for elections to five state assemblies Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Manipur, Goa and Uttarakhand. Votes will be counted on 11 March. Elections in Uttarakhand will be held in single phase on February 15.

All 5 states will go for elections in one go.

GoaDubbed as India's tourist paradise, the tiny state of Goa will go to the polls on February 4 to elect 40 members of the legislative assembly.

On January 3, the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs chose to conduct the first phase of the Parliamentary budget session from January 31 to February 9, instead of last week of February.

Voting in Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state that is home to 200 million people, will begin on February 11 and finish on March 8, chief election commissioner Nasim Zaidi told reporters.

Dentsu boss resigns over employee's death in workplace
Reports said Ishii will tender his resignation at a Dentsu board meeting next month but stay in the role until March. The Japanese government ruled in September that Takahashi's death had been caused by working excessive hours.

The BJP is in power in Goa and is an ally of the ruling Akali Dal in Punjab. Elections in Manipur will be held in two phases, March 4 and March 8. The polls for the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth phase in UP will be held on February 15, 19, 23, 27 and March 4. "As far as BJP is concerned, it is a sinking ship deserted by ideological cadres and full of party-hopping politicians". In Goa, where the party is hoping to perform well, the AAP seems to have lost steam after making a grand entry.

Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi when questioned on whether an early budget would violate the model code of conduct said that his team had taken all factors under consideration, indicating that the poll panel may not have any issues with the advancing of the budget session. Polls in Manipur can be divided into phases considering the on-going road blockade by some Naga groups.

Apart from the 750 companies, the Ministry will also press into action 100 companies from the State Armed Police Forces and India Reserve Battalions that will be drawn from various States for the poll exercise, North Block sources said.

The Aam Aadmi Party has been campaigning extensively in Punjab and Goa for the last few months as the party seeks to expand its footprint beyond the national capital. All preparations will be made to ensure law and order during the polls, he added.
